Music in Schools
This is an outreach program by The Headroom musicians.
A platform created to receive arts practitioners from other cities, countries and continents to our beloved KZN.

  • To share experiences and exchange culture.
  • To showcase our arts, create new platforms and new audiences for ourselves.

Before the pandemic this mobile concept facilitated regular work for aspiring community artists, music students, who otherwise have no regular access to structured artistic platforms. We visited schools and municipal halls introducing our music and our traditional instruments.
Nurturing such relationships between the skills of organized professional arts practitioners and under-resourced cultural societies has a potential to create dynamic social learning environment and teaching opportunities for unemployed arts practitioners by frequently inviting them to give workshops and performances during the Music in Schools sessions.

Through going around KZN’s inner city venues, rural settlements and Townships with Art Knows no Boundaries projects, we have proven that there’s a need for such platforms, complimented by regular performances and discussions.
Besides such platforms being a need, they’ll also bring families and communities together developing a cohesive culture.
At Art Knows No boundaries taking Arts to schools, public spaces in communities, highlights the need for conservation and ongoing platforms for our oral history.

Women Inspiring change
Every year since 2013, The Headroom hosts female musicians who inspire change in our industry. Taking music, hope and healing neurons in schools, community halls and Arts culture centers in KZN. During the Covid pandemic a lot is being realized by South Africans and the world over. Those who stayed alone and those in hospitals understood the importance of good and positive company. The need for company with positive outlook on life whilst the world is locked down. As musicians, our importance and the need to be present in our communities was realized by us and by all who care for a better world.

In 2021 Women who inspire change will be pursuing a market research based tour in places like City Parks, Office Parks with common areas, libraries, Hospitals and Old Age homes
This market research is aimed at discovering new needs in the South African health and well-being market, where music can contribute meaningfully. Forging new relations with these institutions also making sure that musicians are kept active, creative and working regularly. Making sure that South African working spaces are filled with Joy and hope and are being productive.

Live Music Broadcast on Radio – UKHOZI FM & LOTUS FM
As our relations with local artists grew, new content recorded in the headroom studio, we needed an outlet, that is when we invited Ukhozi FM Jazz Host, Mr Mandla Mdletshe to present to him a new body of works mostly from the province and request for an opportunity to showcase live on his radio program, a two hour program of every Sunday .

We have had more than six successful Live Radio broadcast events on Ukhozi FM’s Sunday Jazz show. We also forged another meaningful relationship with Lotus FM, where we showcased a Durban born Drama Riley Giandhari, who had just won a runner up position in an international Scholarship Competition an initiative of S.A.M.R.O and Norway.
